AlertPing

LogicMonitor vs New Relic pricing per device and per user and which is cheaper

Short answer: LogicMonitor charges $16 per Hybrid Unit a month on Essentials, one unit per server or network device, and lists no per-user fee. New Relic charges nothing per host: you pay per engineer ($10 for the first full user and $99 for each of up to five on Standard, $349 each on Pro) plus $0.40 per GB ingested past 100 GB. A small team with a large fleet usually pays less on New Relic. A large team with a small fleet pays less on LogicMonitor. The sixth engineer is where New Relic jumps: $1,688 more a month.

the short version

One bills the estate, the other bills the team

LogicMonitor and New Relic end up on the same shortlist when a US IT or platform team wants one tool for servers, cloud and applications. They price that job on opposite axes, and that is the whole story of which one is cheaper for you.

LogicMonitor counts what you monitor. Its three packages cost $16, $27 or $53 per Hybrid Unit a month, and a unit is one collector-monitored device (server, VM, firewall, router or switch), one cloud IaaS instance, seven cloud PaaS resources or five wireless access points. The bill is the monthly average of daily unit counts. The pricing page has no per-user line.

New Relic counts who looks and how much data arrives. Basic users are free. Core users are $49 each. Full platform users cost $10 for the first and $99 for each additional on Standard, capped at five, and $349 each on Pro with an annual commitment ($418.80 month to month). Every account gets 100 GB of ingest a month free, then $0.40 per GB, or $0.60 on Data Plus. There is no host fee at all.

Every figure here is US list, read from logicmonitor.com/pricing, LogicMonitor's Hybrid Unit billing documentation and newrelic.com/pricing. LogicMonitor describes its numbers as starting prices based on standard minimum quantities and terms, so treat them as where the quote begins.

the number that decides it

40 GB per host is where the two bills meet

Strip out the users and compare one server against one server. On LogicMonitor Essentials a server costs $16. On New Relic it costs whatever it ingests past the free 100 GB, at $0.40 per GB. Divide one by the other and you get the line: a host that sends 40 GB a month costs the same on both. Below 40 GB, New Relic's per-host cost is lower. Above it, LogicMonitor's flat unit wins.

Data a host sends per month New Relic, original ingest New Relic, Data Plus LM Essentials LM Advanced
2 GB$0.80$1.20$16$27
5 GB$2.00$3.00$16$27
10 GB$4.00$6.00$16$27
20 GB$8.00$12.00$16$27
40 GB$16.00$24.00$16$27
67.5 GB$27.00$40.50$16$27

The New Relic columns are marginal cost, after the account's free 100 GB is used. On Data Plus the line moves down to 26.7 GB, and against LogicMonitor Advanced it moves up to 67.5 GB. How much a host sends depends on what you turn on: infrastructure metrics alone are light, while verbose application logs and traces can put one busy server well past 40 GB. Before either sales call, pull a week of real ingest from a trial and multiply it out. That single measurement settles more of this decision than any feature grid.

the other side of the bill

The sixth engineer costs $1,688 a month on New Relic

New Relic Standard stops at five full platform users. Five users cost $406 a month ($10 plus four at $99). A sixth means moving to Pro, where every full user is $349 on an annual commitment: six users are $2,094, a jump of $1,688 a month, or $20,256 a year, for one hire. LogicMonitor has no equivalent step because it does not price per user.

Put the other way: one New Relic Pro seat costs as much as 21.8 servers on LogicMonitor Essentials, or 12.9 on Advanced. If your on-call rotation, SRE team and the developers who read traces all need full access, count them before you count hosts. Core users at $49 and free basic users soften this for people who only need dashboards and alerts.

five estates, priced

Is LogicMonitor cheaper than New Relic? Five estates priced

List prices per month. The New Relic column is full platform users plus ingest past the free 100 GB at $0.40 per GB. The GB per host is an assumption we state on each row, because it is the variable that moves the answer. LogicMonitor figures are servers times the unit price.

Estate LM Essentials LM Advanced New Relic Cheaper on list
20 servers, 5 GB each, 5 engineers on Standard$320$540$406LogicMonitor Essentials, by $86
50 servers, 5 GB each, 5 engineers on Standard$800$1,350$466New Relic, 42% less
200 servers, 10 GB each, 3 engineers on Standard$3,200$5,400$968New Relic, 70% less
100 servers, 40 GB each, 5 engineers on Standard$1,600$2,700$1,966LogicMonitor Essentials, 19% less
50 servers, 5 GB each, 12 engineers on Pro$800$1,350$4,248LogicMonitor, by a wide margin

With five engineers on Standard and about 5 GB a host, LogicMonitor Essentials is cheaper up to 26 servers and New Relic is cheaper from 27. At 20 GB a host the crossover moves out to 46 servers. The pattern holds across every row: New Relic rewards a small team watching a large, quiet fleet, and LogicMonitor rewards a large team, a noisy fleet, or both.

Network gear tilts toward LogicMonitor for a different reason. A $16 unit includes discovery, topology, config change tracking and NetFlow for that device. New Relic can poll SNMP and bill the data, but network monitoring is not what its product is built around. If half your estate is switches and firewalls, the comparison you probably want is PRTG vs WhatsUp Gold or LogicMonitor vs Datadog, where Datadog prices network devices at $7 each.

the external check line

New Relic uptime pings are free but API checks are not

Credit where it is due: New Relic ping monitors are free and unlimited on every edition, including the free tier. If all you need is to know that a URL answers once a minute, New Relic does that for nothing and beats both LogicMonitor and us on price.

The meter starts on everything else. API tests, simple and scripted browser monitors, step monitors, certificate checks and broken-link monitors all count as checks, one per run per location. Standard includes 10,000 a month, Pro 1,000,000, and the rest cost $0.005 each. One API test every minute from three locations is 131,499 checks, which is $607.50 a month on Standard once the included checks are used. Twenty of them come to $13,099.90 on Standard and $8,149.90 on Pro.

On LogicMonitor, LM Uptime is an add-on on Essentials with no published price and bundled from Advanced. Moving a 50-unit estate from Essentials to Advanced to get it adds $11 a unit, $550 a month.

That outside view of your endpoints is all we sell. AlertPing checks websites, APIs, TCP ports, SSL certificates and cron heartbeats from US East and EU Central, and only pages someone when a second region confirms the failure. SMS, email, Slack and webhook alerts and a public status page come with every plan. Keep LogicMonitor or New Relic for what happens inside your hosts. The per-check math is spelled out in New Relic synthetics pricing and the unit math in our LogicMonitor pricing breakdown.

honest scorecard

Where each one actually wins

LogicMonitor wins on

  • Network devices: topology, config tracking and NetFlow inside a $16 unit.
  • Large teams, because there is no per-user line to grow.
  • Noisy hosts that send more than 40 GB a month.
  • Wireless-heavy estates, five access points to one unit.
  • Agentless collection across hybrid and on-prem estates.

New Relic wins on

  • Application performance, distributed tracing and error tracking.
  • Small teams with big fleets: no host fee at all.
  • A usable perpetual free tier with 100 GB a month.
  • Free, unlimited ping monitors on every edition.
  • A fully published price list with no minimum quantities.

Where we fit

  • We replace neither. No agent, no collector, no SNMP, no logs, no APM.
  • We check websites, APIs, ports, SSL and cron heartbeats from outside.
  • A second region confirms every failure before anyone is paged.
  • $49 a month for 20 monitors at 60 seconds; 30-second checks from $59.
  • SMS alerts and a public status page on every plan, no per-check meter.

buyer scenarios

Pick by team size and what breaks

  • Outages start in your own code and five people debug them. New Relic Standard. Tracing is the product, and $406 a month covers the team.
  • Outages start in the network or a VM host. LogicMonitor. Network visibility is in the base unit, and you are not paying per engineer.
  • A 20-person IT department that all needs dashboards and alerts. Price LogicMonitor first. On New Relic, work out how many truly need full access and how many can be core users at $49.
  • Hundreds of containers or cloud VMs with a small platform team. New Relic, provided ingest per host stays well below 40 GB. Measure it in the trial.
  • An MSP running many client estates. LogicMonitor offers product-by-product MSP pricing through its account team and is built around multi-tenant use.
  • You mainly need to know the website and API are up. Neither platform is the cheap way to do it past plain pings. A dedicated uptime service covers 20 endpoints from two regions for $49 to $59 a month.

plainly

What AlertPing does not do

We are the third option on this page, not a replacement for either platform. If anything below is a requirement, buy LogicMonitor or New Relic and run us next to it as the independent outside check.

  • No agent or collector, so no CPU, memory, disk or process metrics from inside a host.
  • No SNMP, NetFlow or topology maps.
  • No log management, tracing or APM.
  • No scripted multi-step browser journeys.
  • No monitoring of private addresses behind your firewall. We check what the internet can reach.
  • No free plan. Starter is $49 a month at 60-second checks; 30-second checks start at $59.

questions

LogicMonitor vs New Relic, answered

Is LogicMonitor cheaper than New Relic?

It depends on team size and data volume. LogicMonitor charges $16 per server on Essentials with no per-user fee. New Relic charges per full user plus $0.40 per GB past 100 GB, with no host fee. Five engineers watching 50 quiet servers pay $466 on New Relic and $800 on LogicMonitor; twelve engineers flip it the other way.

Is LogicMonitor better than New Relic?

LogicMonitor is the stronger fit for hybrid infrastructure and networks, with discovery, topology, config tracking and NetFlow in the base package. New Relic is the stronger fit for application performance, with distributed tracing, error tracking and log analysis. Teams whose outages start in code usually prefer New Relic.

How much does New Relic cost per user?

Basic users are free and core users are $49 a month. Full platform users are $10 for the first and $99 for each additional on Standard, up to five, and $349 each on Pro with an annual commitment or $418.80 month to month. Enterprise is quoted.

Does New Relic charge per host?

No. New Relic has no host or device fee. Hosts cost what they ingest: the first 100 GB a month across the account is free, then $0.40 per GB, or $0.60 per GB on Data Plus. A host sending 40 GB a month costs $16 in ingest, the same as one LogicMonitor Essentials unit.

How much does LogicMonitor cost?

LogicMonitor lists $16 per Hybrid Unit a month on Essentials, $27 on Advanced and $53 on Signature with Edwin AI. A unit is one device or cloud instance, seven PaaS resources or five access points. These are starting list prices based on standard minimum quantities and terms.

Which is better for network monitoring, LogicMonitor or New Relic?

LogicMonitor. Network monitoring is part of its core product, with SNMP collection, topology mapping, config change tracking and NetFlow included per device. New Relic can ingest SNMP data and bills it as ingest, but its product centers on applications.

Can LogicMonitor or New Relic monitor website uptime?

Yes. New Relic ping monitors are free and unlimited, while its API and browser checks cost $0.005 each past the included allowance. LogicMonitor includes LM Uptime from the Advanced package. A dedicated uptime service such as AlertPing covers 20 endpoints from two regions for $49 a month.

Do LogicMonitor and New Relic have a free trial?

LogicMonitor offers a 15-day free trial of any package. New Relic has a perpetual free tier with one full platform user, 100 GB of ingest and 500 synthetic checks a month, with no credit card required.

Two regions have to agree

A single failed probe never wakes anybody. A second region, US East or EU Central, re-checks first, so a hiccup on one route is not a 3am phone call.

what a plan covers

SMS is in the price, not in credits

Email, Slack and webhook alerts are unlimited on every plan, SMS comes with a monthly allowance, and each plan hosts status pages. No credit packs, no per-message fee, no per-monitor math.

how setup works

One URL, no agent to install

Paste the address, choose where alerts go, and the first check runs from both regions. No agent, no config file, nothing to deploy on your side.

The outside check neither platform prices flat

Websites, APIs, ports and heartbeats checked from two regions, SMS and a status page on every plan, from $49 a month.
