These two land on the same shortlist for one reason: both will tell you when your site stops responding. Almost everything after that is different, including how you get charged.

Pingdom, now part of SolarWinds, is a packaged product. You pick a tier, you get a number of uptime checks, and the price does not move when your traffic does. Synthetic Monitoring starts at $15 a month for 10 uptime checks and runs to $249 a month for 250 or more. Real User Monitoring is sold separately from about $10 a month. What you are paying extra for higher up the range is advanced checks: scripted, multi-step flows such as a login or a checkout.

Datadog Synthetic Monitoring is a module inside a much larger platform, and it is metered. Datadog's own billing documentation is precise about the units: it "charges per ten thousand API tests runs" and "per thousand browser tests". List rates land near $5 per 10,000 API runs and $12 per 1,000 browser runs on an annual commitment, with pay as you go higher. Those numbers look tiny. The run counts do not.

So the real question is not which tool detects downtime better. It is whether you want a fixed monitoring bill or a variable one, and whether uptime data is worth more to you sitting next to your traces than sitting on its own.

What Datadog synthetics actually cost once you multiply

This is the part that surprises people, so it is worth doing the arithmetic in public. An average month is 30.44 days, or 43,833 minutes. A single API test running once a minute from a single location is therefore 43,833 runs a month. At $5 per 10,000 runs, that one monitor costs about $21.92 a month.

Two things multiply that number fast. Every location you add multiplies the run count, because the test executes once per location. And every step down in interval multiplies it again. The table below uses the $5 per 10,000 annual-commitment rate for API tests. Pay as you go and overage rates run higher.

Read the bottom rows carefully before you conclude Datadog is expensive, because that would be the wrong lesson. Datadog is not priced badly. It is priced for a different job. If you run eight API tests against critical internal services at five-minute intervals, the synthetics line on your invoice is about $35 a month and it buys you something no dedicated uptime tool can: the failing check sits in the same timeline as the trace and the log that explain it.

The mismatch appears when people use metered synthetics as a general uptime monitor across a large estate at a fast interval. That is the shape where a flat plan wins by an order of magnitude, and it is why plenty of Datadog customers run a dedicated website monitoring tool alongside it rather than instead of it.

  • You must test private or internal endpoints from inside your own network.

  • Your check volume is small and deliberate rather than broad and constant.

Pingdom wins when

  • You want a fixed monthly number with no run counting and no true-up.
  • Page speed history and real user monitoring matter as much as uptime.
  • You need scripted checkout or login flows without adopting a platform.
  • Non-engineers will be reading the reports and the interface has to be simple.

You run one product and a marketing site

Pingdom Starter at $15 a month covers 10 checks and gives you page speed alongside them. It is a clean, boring, predictable answer. The trade you are making is detection speed, because 1 minute is the floor and there is no faster tier to buy your way into.

You have an SLA with money attached

Can I use Datadog just for uptime monitoring?

You can, and for a small number of endpoints it works well.
