That flat per-check rate is the single most useful thing to know before you talk to Pingdom, because it means your bill scales in a perfectly straight line with the number of URLs you watch. There is no tier where checks suddenly get cheap. Every tool in this category that charges by the monitor eventually reaches a plateau; Pingdom's self-serve ladder does not.

Pingdom also offers annual billing at a discount, but the calculator renders those figures dynamically rather than publishing a fixed annual rate card, so treat the monthly column as the number you can rely on and get the annual quote in writing.

Read the last column before the third one. The dollar rate is identical everywhere, so the only thing that actually varies as you move up the ladder is what you get bundled alongside the uptime checks, and it moves against you. At 50 or 100 uptime checks you get one advanced check for every five. By the time you are at 1,000 checks you get one for every 12.5, which is less than half the transaction monitoring per dollar.
The sweet spot on Pingdom's ladder is 50 to 100 checks
If transaction monitoring is part of why you are buying Pingdom, and for most people it is because that is the capability the cheap alternatives do not have, then the 50 and 100 check tiers are the best value on the entire self-serve ladder. Both give you a 5 to 1 ratio. The 10-check entry tier gives you 10 to 1, and everything above 300 checks is worse than the entry tier on that measure.
That leads to a slightly odd but real conclusion: if you need 130 uptime checks and heavy transaction coverage, it can be worth pricing the 100 tier plus a second approach for the remaining 30 URLs, rather than jumping to 200 and watching your advanced allowance ratio drop from 5 to 1 to 6.7 to 1. Ask your account rep to price the advanced checks separately before you accept the next tier up.
What Pingdom costs against flat-rate uptime monitoring
Because Pingdom's rate is linear and flat-plan tools are not, the gap between them widens with every monitor you add. At small counts Pingdom is genuinely cheaper. At 100 monitors it is not.

The crossover sits at 19 monitors, where Pingdom's $1 per check finally meets our $19 Starter plan. Below that Pingdom is the cheaper bill and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Above it the lines diverge fast: at 500 monitors Pingdom's per-check rate is still $1.00 while ours has fallen to $0.378 on the Business plan.
Cost per monitor is not the whole purchase, though, and it would be misleading to stop there. Pingdom bundles page speed monitoring, real user monitoring and scripted multi-step transaction checks. We build none of those. If you need to know that the checkout flow completes and not merely that the checkout URL returns a 200, Pingdom does a job we do not do at any price.
Where the Pingdom bill grows without you noticing

Real User Monitoring is a separate subscription. It is not part of the synthetic plan. RUM is sold by pageview volume, starting around $10 a month for 100,000 pageviews and scaling to a billion. A busy ecommerce site can spend more on RUM than on all of its uptime checks combined, and the two products are billed independently.
Advanced checks are the constraint, not the uptime checks. Teams size their plan on the number of URLs and then discover the transaction scripts they actually wanted need advanced slots they do not have. Because the ratio degrades at higher tiers, buying more uptime checks is an inefficient way to buy more advanced checks.
SMS is credit-based. Pingdom allocates SMS credits per plan rather than including unlimited messaging. During a long incident that pages repeatedly, credits are exactly the wrong thing to run out of. This is a pattern across the category: StatusCake meters SMS at 75 credits a month on Superior and 400 on Business, and UptimeRobot sells credit packs too. It is one of the few places where a flat plan with unmetered SMS is straightforwardly better rather than just cheaper.
Is Pingdom worth the price?
It is worth it if you use the parts that justify it. Pingdom's value is the combination of synthetic uptime, page speed, RUM and scripted transactions from one vendor with unlimited users and a long operating history. If you are buying all four, $100 a month for 100 checks is reasonable for what is in the box.
It is poor value if you bought it to answer "is the site up". That is the case for most of the accounts we see migrate. Paying $1 per URL per month for a status-code check, with metered SMS and a check interval no faster than one minute, is a lot of money for a job that flat-rate tools do for a fraction of it. The honest test is whether you have opened the RUM dashboard in the last quarter. If not, you are paying for a suite and using a pinger.
Worth noting on the alerting side: an uptime tool tells you the URL is down, but customers frequently start complaining publicly before any monitor confirms an outage, so it is worth watching where your customers are already talking alongside whatever checks you run. The two signals catch different failures.

Two figures separate the tools in this category more than any feature list: the fastest check interval you can buy, and whether alerting is metered. Pingdom's floor is one minute, which puts average detection at 30 seconds and worst case at 60. That is fine for a brochure site and thin for a checkout.
