Pingdom Synthetic Monitoring starts at $18 a month for 10 uptime checks, 1 advanced check and 50 SMS alerts, or $16.50 a month billed annually ($198 a year). The price per uptime check does fall with volume, but slowly: $1.80 at 10 checks, $1.49 at 100 and $1.295 at 1,000 on monthly billing, so a check at 1,000 is only 28% cheaper than a check at 10. What gets worse as you buy more is the number of advanced (transaction) checks bundled in: 5 uptime checks per advanced check at the 50 and 100 steps, against 12.5 to 1 at 750 and 1,000. Real User Monitoring is a separate subscription starting at $18 a month for 100,000 pageviews.
That slow taper is the most useful thing to know before you talk to Pingdom. Your bill scales almost in a straight line with the number of URLs you watch: going from 100 checks to 1,000 multiplies the monthly bill by about 8.7 while the check count goes up 10 times. There is no step where checks suddenly get cheap.

Read the last column alongside the fifth one. The per-check rate drifts down from $1.80 to about $1.30 across this range, but what you get bundled alongside the uptime checks moves against you. At 50 or 100 uptime checks you get one advanced check for every five. By the time you are at 1,000 checks you get one for every 12.5. Even after the volume discount, that is less than half the transaction monitoring per dollar: about $7.45 of monthly spend per advanced check at 100 checks, against about $16.19 at 1,000.
The sweet spot on Pingdom's ladder is 50 to 100 checks
If transaction monitoring is part of why you are buying Pingdom, and for most people it is because that is the capability the cheap alternatives do not have, then the 50 and 100 check steps are the best value on the ladder. Both give you a 5 to 1 ratio. The 10-check entry step gives you 10 to 1, the 400 and 500 steps are no better than that, and 750 and 1,000 are worse.
That leads to a slightly odd but real conclusion: if you need 130 uptime checks and heavy transaction coverage, it can be worth pricing the 100 step plus a second approach for the remaining 30 URLs, rather than jumping to 200 and watching your advanced allowance ratio drop from 5 to 1 to 6.7 to 1. Ask your account rep to price the advanced checks separately before you accept the next step up.
What Pingdom costs against flat-rate uptime monitoring
Because Pingdom's per-check rate falls only slowly and flat-plan tools step down sharply, the gap between them widens with every monitor you add. At 10 and 20 monitors on monthly billing Pingdom is the cheaper bill. At 100 monitors it is not close. Figures below are monthly billing on both sides.

Pingdom is the cheaper bill at the bottom on monthly billing: $18 for 10 checks and $40 for the 25-check step, against $49 for our Starter plan, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. On annual billing our Starter is $24 a month for 20 monitors, still above Pingdom's $16.50 for 10 checks. Past 25 checks the lines diverge fast: at 500 monitors Pingdom's per-check rate is $1.36 while ours has fallen to $0.378 on the Business plan.
Cost per monitor is not the whole purchase, though, and it would be misleading to stop there. Pingdom bundles page speed monitoring, real user monitoring and scripted multi-step transaction checks. We build none of those. If you need to know that the checkout flow completes and not merely that the checkout URL returns a 200, Pingdom does a job we do not do at any price.
Where the Pingdom bill grows without you noticing
Three line items account for most of the gap between the quote people expect and the invoice they get.
Real User Monitoring is a separate subscription. It is not part of the synthetic plan. RUM is sold by pageview volume, starting at $18 a month ($16.50 on annual billing) for 100,000 pageviews and scaling to a billion. A busy ecommerce site can spend more on RUM than on all of its uptime checks combined, and the two products are billed independently.
Advanced checks are the constraint, not the uptime checks. Teams size their plan on the number of URLs and then discover the transaction scripts they actually wanted need advanced slots they do not have. Because the ratio degrades at higher tiers, buying more uptime checks is an inefficient way to buy more advanced checks.
SMS is credit-based. Pingdom allocates SMS credits per plan rather than including unlimited messaging. During a long incident that pages repeatedly, credits are exactly the wrong thing to run out of. This is a pattern across the category: StatusCake meters SMS at 75 credits a month on Superior and 400 on Business, and UptimeRobot sells credit packs too. It is one of the few places where a flat plan with a generous included SMS allowance is straightforwardly better rather than just cheaper.
Is Pingdom worth the price?
It is worth it if you use the parts that justify it. Pingdom's value is the combination of synthetic uptime, page speed, RUM and scripted transactions from one vendor with unlimited users and a long operating history. If you are buying all four, $149 a month for 100 checks is reasonable for what is in the box.
It is poor value if you bought it to answer "is the site up". That is the case for most of the accounts we see migrate. Paying around $1.50 per URL per month for a status-code check, with metered SMS and a check interval no faster than one minute, is a lot of money for a job that flat-rate tools do for a fraction of it. The honest test is whether you have opened the RUM dashboard in the last quarter. If not, you are paying for a suite and using a pinger.
Worth noting on the alerting side: an uptime tool tells you the URL is down, but customers frequently start complaining publicly before any monitor confirms an outage, so it is worth watching where your customers are already talking alongside whatever checks you run. The two signals catch different failures.
How Pingdom compares on the numbers that decide it
Two figures separate the tools in this category more than any feature list: the fastest check interval you can buy, and whether alerting is metered. Pingdom's floor is one minute, which puts average detection at 30 seconds and worst case at 60. That is fine for a brochure site and thin for a checkout.
