How much does AppDynamics cost? Editions, cores and synthetic monitoring

Splunk AppDynamics is priced per virtual CPU. Infrastructure Edition starts at $6 per vCPU a month billed annually, Premium Edition at $33 and Enterprise Edition at $50. Add-ons are metered separately: Secure Application at $13.75 per CPU core, SAP monitoring at $95 per CPU core, real user monitoring at $0.06 per 1,000 tokens and browser synthetics at a flat $12 per test location a month. A 20-server estate on Premium with four cores each runs $2,640 a month for application monitoring alone.

The complication is that AppDynamics is no longer sold as AppDynamics. Cisco acquired the company, then acquired Splunk, and appdynamics.com/pricing now 301-redirects to Splunk's observability pricing page where the product is listed as Splunk AppDynamics. Sitting beside it on the same price list is Splunk Observability Cloud, a different product with a completely different billing model. Most people costing out AppDynamics in 2026 never price the second one, and on large machines it is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin.

The Splunk AppDynamics rate card

These are the US dollar list prices published on Splunk's own pricing page, checked in August 2026. Every figure is a "starts at" number. AppDynamics has always been sold through enterprise agreements, so treat list as your ceiling and a way to compare shapes rather than as a quote.

Read that table for its shape, not just its numbers. Six of the eight meters count cores. That single fact determines almost everything about what an AppDynamics invoice looks like, and it is the difference between this vendor and every other major observability platform.

Why per-vCPU pricing behaves differently from everything else

Datadog bills per host and per product. New Relic bills per user and per gigabyte ingested. Dynatrace bills per gigabyte of host memory. AppDynamics bills per core, and cores and memory do not move together in modern cloud fleets. They are decoupled on purpose, which is the whole reason instance families exist.

The practical effect is that AppDynamics is indifferent to how much RAM a machine carries. A database server with 128 GiB of memory and eight cores costs exactly what an eight-core application server with 16 GiB costs: $264 a month on Premium. On Dynatrace those same two machines are $934.40 and $116.80. Solve for where the two vendors meet and you get 4.52 GiB of RAM per vCPU, which is the arithmetic we worked through in full on the AppDynamics vs Dynatrace comparison.

So the first question to answer before you model anything is what your estate actually looks like. Count the cores, not the servers. A team running forty small two-core containers is on the hook for eighty vCPUs, which on Premium is $2,640 a month, and it may feel absurd for machines that small. A team running four fat database hosts is on the hook for far fewer.

Browser synthetics are the one flat meter, and it is a large advantage

Buried in the add-on list is the most unusual price on this page. Browser synthetics are $12 per test location per month, flat. Not per run, not per action, not per check. You can run the same script every minute or once a day and the line item does not change.

That is worth spelling out against the alternative, because the gap is not marginal. Dynatrace charges $4.50 per 1,000 synthetic actions, where every click, navigation and assertion counts as one action. A one-minute monitor executes 43,833 times in an average 30.44-day month. Even a trivial single-action script is therefore $197.25 a month from one location, and a realistic five-step checkout journey is $986.24. AppDynamics charges $12 for either.

The crossover is at roughly one run every 82 minutes for a five-action script. Almost nobody monitors a checkout flow that infrequently, so in practice the flat rate wins every realistic case. If browser journey monitoring is a large part of why you are buying, this line alone can justify the platform.

One limit applies regardless of price. The Splunk AppDynamics documentation states that the minimum frequency support for API monitoring is one minute, and API jobs run from any of 17 AWS locations. Dynatrace, New Relic and Datadog all floor at one minute too. Nothing in this category checks faster, at any budget, which matters if you are buying partly for detection speed.

The second SKU on the same quote

Splunk Observability Cloud sits on the identical price list and prices per host rather than per vCPU: Infrastructure Monitoring from $15 a host a month, APM from $55 a host, database monitoring from $75 per instance, real user monitoring from $14 per 10,000 sessions and synthetic monitoring from $1 per 10,000 uptime requests.

Compare that $55 per host against AppDynamics Premium on the same machine. An eight-core server is $264 on AppDynamics and $55 on Splunk Observability Cloud APM, because the second product does not care how many cores the box has. The synthetic meter runs the same way: $1 per 10,000 uptime requests is $0.0001 each, so a one-minute HTTP check is $4.38 a month, against $43.83 for the same check on Dynatrace. Exactly ten times cheaper.

The two products are not interchangeable. AppDynamics carries deeper business transaction tracking and the enterprise stack coverage that made its reputation, and Splunk Observability Cloud is the more OpenTelemetry-native option. But if nobody on the call has priced both, the evaluation is incomplete, and the same account team is quoting both.

Three worked bills

List prices, no discount applied, Premium Edition unless stated. The Dynatrace column is there for scale, using its published $0.01 per memory-GiB-hour Full-Stack rate.

The third row is the one worth staring at. Eight memory-heavy database servers cost $2,112 a month on AppDynamics and $3,737.60 on Dynatrace Full-Stack, a difference of $1,625.60 a month or $19,507.20 a year, for monitoring the same eight machines. Nothing about the software changed. Only the billing unit did.

The first two rows go the other way, because general-purpose instances sit at 4 GiB per core, just under the crossover. That is the honest summary of this whole comparison: it is a hardware question wearing a software vendor's clothes.

How to reduce an AppDynamics bill

Start with edition placement. Not every host needs Premium. Infrastructure Edition at $6 per vCPU is a fifth of the price, and plenty of machines in a typical estate are there to be watched rather than traced. Reserve Premium and Enterprise for the services where code-level visibility actually gets used during an incident.

Then look hard at core-metered add-ons, because they compound. Secure Application at $13.75 per core adds $110 a month to a single eight-core host, more than a third of what the APM license costs. SAP monitoring at $95 per core is $1,520 a month on one sixteen-core SAP application server, or $18,240 a year. Neither needs to be estate-wide.

Right-size before you renew, not after. Because the meter is cores, over-provisioned instances are billed twice: once by your cloud provider and once by your observability vendor. Pulling usage out of both vendors' APIs and reconciling it against what you are actually running is the single highest-return exercise before a renewal, and it is straightforward once you have connected the two APIs to a warehouse instead of trying to read it off two dashboards side by side.

Finally, separate detection from diagnosis. A large share of what teams buy observability platforms for is simply knowing that something is down, which is the cheapest job on the list and the one that does not need an agent on every core. How much does AppDynamics cost per user?

It does not publish a per-user price. Unlike New Relic, which charges $349 per full platform user a month on Pro, AppDynamics folds console access into the per-vCPU edition cost. Alerting seats are the exception: Splunk On-Call is quoted separately at $5 per user a month for up to ten seats, billed annually. So a growing engineering team does not move an AppDynamics invoice the way it moves a New Relic one, which is a genuine structural advantage worth naming.

Is AppDynamics worth it?

It is worth it when three things are true at once: your estate is memory-heavy relative to its core count, you need deep business transaction tracing rather than dashboards, and you have enterprise systems like SAP that most cloud-native tools cover thinly. On that profile it is frequently the cheapest serious option, and the flat browser synthetic rate is close to unmatched.

It is poor value when you are core-dense and memory-light, when you mainly want to know whether the site is up, or when you need a price you can model without a sales conversation. Dynatrace publishes a rate card you can compute against to the cent. AppDynamics publishes floors and expects a negotiation, which is fine at enterprise scale and awkward below it.

Is AppDynamics cheaper than Dynatrace?

It depends entirely on your RAM-to-core ratio. The two cost the same at 4.52 GiB of memory per vCPU on Premium Edition. Above that ratio AppDynamics is cheaper, below it Dynatrace is. Database and cache fleets favor AppDynamics heavily; container and stateless API fleets favor Dynatrace.

What is the fastest check interval in AppDynamics synthetic monitoring?

One minute. The Splunk AppDynamics documentation states that the minimum frequency support for API monitoring is one minute, and API jobs can execute from any of 17 AWS locations. Dynatrace, New Relic and Datadog all share the same one-minute floor, so no observability platform in this class offers sub-minute checks.

Does AppDynamics charge for SMS alerts?

Alerting is handled by Splunk On-Call, which is priced separately at $5 per user a month for up to ten seats billed annually. That is a per-seat model, so a large on-call rotation is a growing line item rather than an included feature.

Can I use AppDynamics just for uptime monitoring?

You can, and the browser synthetic add-on at $12 per location is unusually cheap for it. But you are still buying an agent-based platform licensed per core, with a one-minute floor, to answer a question a flat-priced external monitor answers on a flat plan from $19 a month. The platform earns its price on tracing and root cause, not on checking a URL.
